When E3 becomes available by the end of the 2009, it should be easy for businesses to begin using the new technology. All they should need to do is:
- Purchase E3 terminals, which will be offered at prices that are competitive with standard equipment on the market today.
- Resume normal business activity. There should be no changes in the process of accepting card payments – and there should be no new recurring transaction or maintenance fees. Heartland is not adding any encryption-related costs to its merchant processing fees — no monthly encryption maintenance fees, no key management fees, and no activation fees. With E3, Heartland asserts that merchants should not have to pay more to be secure.

"While PCI standards are important, mere compliance with these standards does not ensure that security or data protection activities adequately address security threats and vulnerabilities."
